This spring, I participated in the Mooresville Community Children’s Theatre production of School House Rock Live- The Musical. I got to work with a brand new director and I got the chance to make lasting friendships. The entire process was extremely fun and the music in the show was classic. The songs include, “I’m Just a Bill”, “Conjunction Junction”, and “Three is a Magic Number”. It was definitely neat to learn these songs because I had watched the School House Rock cartoons when I was a kid. I am absolutely in love with the music and I still use some of the information from the songs in school. I will never forget the preamble and I will always know my parts of speech! If school was taught like this musical, then I would definitely be more excited about learning in general. In the beginning of the rehearsal process I had many conflicts which caused me to miss half of the choreography. I worked hard with the choreography videos and learned the dances on my own time. When I came back, I became a leader and soon the director gave me the title of “Dance Captain”. I also got the amazing opportunity to choreograph a few of the numbers in the show. I had never choreographed anything before, but once I started, I loved it. I first sat down and listened to the music and felt the rhythm and found the points in the songs that really needed to be highlighted. I incorporated the use of props in my choreography to allow specific movements designed to work with the props. The first song I choreographed was an upbeat song with 3 people in it. This allowed me to use more intricate movements without it being sloppy. The other song I choreographed included a large number of people so I had to make the movements very specific so that it did not look like a mess. It was a challenge to work with the little kids at first, but once I slowed down and allowed them to understand what I was doing, they picked it up really quickly. After the last show, the director gave out “paper plate awards” to every person in the cast. My award was the “No Mic Needed Award”… I guess my little body can make a larger sound than some might expect!
